A Reader Weighs in on Civic Center Park

Wednesday July 4, 2007
A downtown resident objected to the article about the proposed redesign of Civic Center Park:
"I read your article about Civic Center Park with interest. I have to disagree with you on some points: I live downtown and love the park and don't avoid it. Many tourists and residents visit and use the park daily and it is a precious asset. The presence of 'drug dealers' and 'homeless' is exaggerated. There are street people in the park, but they don't bother visitors and have every right to use a public park."

As a new resident of Denver, I visited Civic Center Park a few months ago and was disgusted. I expected a beautiful park in front of the Capitol, but faced a place no tourist or resident in their right mind would go to.

Walking through the park, we ran into a brawl between what looked like 4 junkies. To avoid it, we headed on another path, and walked into a drug deal between 2 people. I saw a news van in the park and told them that this was something worth talking about, but they told me it wasn’t worth it . . . no one in the Mayor or Police Chief’s office would be interested. . .

I didn’t see one policeman, but I counted handfulls of vagrants, druggies, and other undesirables.

If there isn’t a cleanup, there is no chance for Civic Center Park!
