The Harkins Valley Art in Tempe, Ariz., is the state's oldest movie theater still in operation. Company founder Red Harkins designed the movie theater at the age of 25 in 1940, and the theater underwent a $1 million renovation in 2001. The company is still a family-run business, with Dan Harkins currently serving as owner and CEO. The firm is privately held.
In Colorado, Harkins Theatre operates an 18-screen megaplex, the Northfield 18. The theater shows 3D movies as well as mainstream cinema, with a few independent movies sprinkled in the mix every now and then. Northfield 18 boasts one 70 x 30-foot screen in its largest auditorium, which seats 600 patrons. The theater chain also has a play area for children and a snack bar.
