The Louvre Museum in Paris opened its doors in 1793, and now houses 35,000 works of art from antiquities to mid-19th century paintings. The museum, located on the banks of the Seine river, originally served as the palace for French royalty.
The Louvre's most famous artworks include two depictions of ideal feminine beauty, Da Vinci's painting of Mona Lisa and the Greek sculpture of Venus de Milo. The Louvre also contains a treasure trove of jewelry, tapestries, bronzes and ceramics.
The Artisans & Kings exhibit brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings, and decorative arts collected during the reign of Louis XIV, XV and XVI. Louis XVI met his fate as the last King of France under the guillotine's blade, along with his Queen, Marie Antoinette.
A Sevres Porcelain bust of Marie Antoinette is on display, as are paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian and Van Dyck. The royal artwork from the Louvre is organized into four themes: Collections of Kings, Politics of Style, Trappings of Power, and Crafting a Lifestyle.
