Sustainable energy forms one pillar of Barack Obama's political platform, and Denver boasts several cutting-edge environmental initiatives to make Obama proud. The Alliance Center, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the National Wind Technology Center are all opening their doors to visitors during the week of the Democratic National Convention. The free tours will showcase Colorado's contributions to energy research.

Location: Tours meet at the Alliance Center at 1536 Wynkoop St.
Time: 10 11 a.m. or 1 - 2 p.m.
What: Tour a historic warehouse converted to all-green office space for 30 non-profits by the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado.
Contact: 303-572-1536 for more information. You do not need to register for the tour, but tours are limited to 20 people. Passes will be handed out beginning an hour before each tour.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
Date: Tuesday, August 26, 2008
Location: Tours meet at the Xcel Energy building at 550 15th St. Board the bus at 7:45 a.m. or 9:15 a.m., 30 min. before the tours start.
Time: 8:15 a.m. 12 noon or 9:45 a.m. 1 p.m.
What: Tour the U.S. Department of Energys premier research laboratory for alternative energy. U.S. citizens must bring a government-issued ID. Non U.S. citizens should call 303-275-3829 for ID requirements.
