The pros for the redesign include making the park a destination for tourists and residents. The restaurant and ice rink would encourage families to venture to Civic Center Park. Revitalizing the park would make it flow with the newer construction of the library and art museum. Right now, most Denver residents skirt the park instead of walking through it because of the homeless people and drug dealers hanging out there.
The cons to renovating the park include the cost and destruction of its historical importance. The budget for the redesign has been estimated at $41.36 million, according to the 2005 Master Plan. The park's historical importance as Denver's oldest park across from the State Capitol could be overshadowed by the redesign. Some residents have also pointed out that the water feature might be difficult to maintain in Colorado's dry climate.
